I met Dr. Jessica T. Emery in the electric city of Miami. We were waiting for the elevator in our hotel and started talking. She has a fantastic energy to her. I hung out with her and her friend during the Miami Vision Summit, and I learned so much from her about how to rock your business. One tip she gave me was “everything is content,” and that self-confidence is a huge part of being successful. Leaving Miami, I felt like I gained so much more than just what was discussed at the conference because I met Dr. Jessica. She is a must-know entrepreneur who is breaking glass with everything she does.

Lauren Elizabeth: Tell us who you are.

Dr. Jessica T. Emery: My name is Dr. Jessica Emery. I am a wife, and I'm a mother to 3 young kiddos. I’m a daughter, I’m a sister, and I’m an aunt! I was born in Massachusetts, but now live in Chicago!

I am the owner of several companies: Sugar Fix Dental Loft, dental soiree, Soiree Stock, White Haute Teeth. I also have Instagram accounts that I run for The Dental Diaries and Dental Girl Gang.

Sugar Fix Dental Loft is a 100% Fee-For-Service dental practice that I opened from the ground-up over 12 years ago.

White Haute Teeth is a whitening bar that will be opening soon (we offer "flights" of white!)

The Dental Diaries is my personal space where I share all about my life, dentistry, travel, fashion, etc.

dental soiree is my dental digital marketing company. We specialize in content creation, unlike any other company out there! We also write fully-optimized custom blogs for our clients. My final business is Soiree Stock- a place where we've created beautifully styled stock photos (we also add new images every month!) for dentists as well as hashtags & captions.

Ride the wave and not get trapped underneath it.
— Dr. Jessica T. Emery

LE: You started as a dentist and now have built three successful business, how does that happen?

JE: Building businesses is hard; there is no doubt about it. My husband Andrew is my biggest cheerleader. He embraces my entrepreneurial spirit, and he allows me the freedom to soar with my ideas! I've also surrounded myself with some of the hardest working team players in the industry- they are all full of light, hustle, and energy & I love them all!

LE: You recently just hosted your first branding and social media workshop.

JE: The #getsocial workshop that I hosted in Chicago in June was INCREDIBLE. Seriously a dream come true for me. I had participants from all over the United States come for two days to learn all about Instagram & Facebook marketing. We also created LOADS of content for and with them to use on their social. We had overflowing swag bags thanks to some very generous sponsors as well! I'm so proud of myself and of my team for making that happen! We already have a waiting list for the next workshop!

LE: How did you establish yourself and your brand as an authority in the dental industry?

3 tips to apply to any business:

  1. Just start! Leap, dive! Follow your passion and dream!

  2. You MUST have a presence on social media. Story tell. Be authentic.

  3. Keep your head to the ground, blinders on. Work hard and stay in your own lane. Don’t spend to much time getting hung up with what others are doing in your industry.

JE:  I think I've been established as an authority in the industry because I have such a detailed eye and creative spirit. My team and I work incredibly hard when we are at a client's practice; our attention to detail is beyond what others in our industry produce. In fact, many dental soiree clients have come to us AFTER they've already used another photographer or content creator because they just weren't happy with the outcome! It's important that I've been a practicing dentist for so many years as well- I know what works and what doesn't as far as dental marketing & content creation goes!

LE: How are you able to manage the workload and balance it with family life?

JE: Family life...again, that goes back to Andrew and my live-in nanny. He organizes the kids' complex schedules, and he makes sure that I know when things are so that I can attend events and be as involved in their school events and sporting activities as possible. I also have an incredible personal assistant that keeps my calendar in-check and takes care of many things for me. Seriously don’t know what I would do without her! :)

LE: What does it feel like when you've helped another dentist develop their brand and social presence?

JE: I wish I could describe in words how full my heart feels when a dentist entrusts my team and me with helping them with their branding and content creation. There are several companies out there doing similar things for dentists, and I love that dentists choose us because they know we are different than all of the others out there. We give white-glove service to our clients, and our finished products are absolutely gorgeous.

LE: Tell us about your breaking glass moment.

JE: Wow, there have been so many amazing ones. This sounds crazy and goes way back but probably getting into dental school. I was not a "student" type but a total visionary! I knew that I would make a great dentist and that I wanted to disrupt the traditional dental model. I still sometimes wonder how I got into Tufts and got through it all. After that, the rest just fell in place (along with a TON of hard work!).

LE: What's your daily routine like?

JE: Each workday, I like to wake up early (usually around 5 a.m.) and head out of the house to go for a run. I live close to Lake Michigan, so it's nice to run along the lakeshore- it really calms me. Then I head home to shower and get ready for the workday. If it's a day that I practice at Sugar Fix, I like to be in the office by 7 a.m. I don't see patients until 8 a.m., but it's important to be fully ready for my patients. We also have a team huddle at 7.30 a.m. to discuss the patients coming in that day & treatments that we'll be performing that day as well as any specialized information that we'll need to make sure our patients get the top-notch care and white glove service that we are known for.

If it's a non-practicing day, I'm at my loft space for dental soiree. There I record videos, create content, speak with clients or possible clients, and have meetings.

In the evenings, I try to see friends once or twice a month, otherwise- I'm with my kids & my husband. We do like to take a couple of family holidays together throughout the year, plus spend time visiting with family.

I usually TRY to be in bed by 10 p.m. each night. Rarely happens...;)

LE: What is the best piece of advice you've received?

JE: “The only way to make sense of out of change is to plunge into it and join the dance.” I have my own play on this which is to ride the wave and not get trapped underneath it.

LE: What is your favorite quote and why?

JE: "Leap and the net will appear." Because I believe if you really believed in what you are doing it will all work out.

LE: What advice would you give to a Girl on the Rise?

JE: You GO, girl!!

LE: What's your favorite thing to do when you're off the clock?

JE: Off the clock? Ha!! As an entrepreneur, I am always on- in a good way, though. I’d probably say stopping, kicking back, and relaxing.

If you haven’t already check out Dr. Jessica Emery’s sites and social pages, her Instagram is on point (all accounts), and the accounts she manages are fun to follow even if you aren’t in dentistry. Dr. Emery is an excellent example of how you can build your dreams and make them into reality. Best of luck in all your future ventures.
